Vision
Statement
The
congregation of Union Presbyterian Church has served the city of
Schenectady for more than 100 years. We are a friendly congregation
that nurtures members and welcomes all people. Our worship services
strongly reflect the Presbyterian tradition while often incorporating
new forms of music, drama and humor. We have experienced excellent
preaching that is relevant to our daily lives, strengthens our faith
and challenges our commitment to serve Christ in the world. Union
Presbyterian has supported a strong Christian Education program,
including active Sr. High and Jr. High youth groups as well as faith
enrichment opportunities for children and adults. We have also emphasized
choral and instrumental music as an integral part of our education
and worship.
Union
church serves the community
around us by conducting Bargain Sales, with the proceeds going
to support many local charities. We also contribute a significant share of our total income
to PCUSA mission projects that extend beyond our local region.
Our members are challenged, by frequent exposure to community/world
needs, issues and concerns, to volunteer for community service.
UPC has also exhibited an ecumenical spirit, evidenced by
our faithful support to the Schenectady Inner City Ministry (SICM).
As we venture into our second century of worship
and service, we hope to preserve what is good from our past, while
embracing new ideas. We seek, first and always, to be a witness
in this community for the living God revealed to us in Christ Jesus.
We strive
to meet the following goals:
-
To provide a comprehensive
and energetic Christian Education program that offers learning
and sharing opportunities to people of all ages;
-
To welcome new members
into the journey of faith;
-
To continue a tradition
of worship deeply rooted in scripture and spiritual enrichment,
while offering innovative forms of worship that will attract
members of all ages and religious backgrounds;
-
To investigate and implement
ways in which the whole congregation can minister to community
needs; and
-
To develop a spirit of
generosity, improve our fiscal responsibility and use our facility
and resources wisely.
The Lord is wonderful and has allowed us to share together in worship,
bible study, music, fellowship, women's association, the men's breakfast
group, summer vacation bible school, youth group, faith enrichment,
and other activities. We also have a prayer chain, which is ongoing
every day. If you are interested in learning more about any of these
events/activities please feel free to contact our pastor, Reverend
Ruth Kuo, the church office or ask any of our members.
History of UPC
The origins of Union Presbyterian Church go back to 1873.
First Presbyterian Church, located in the Stockade section of Schenectady
wanted to reach out to the suburbs. This idea led to the building
of Park Place Chapel, and later the building we are in today.
